AC Milan have identified former boss Massimiliano Allegri as their top candidate for the head coach role and are reportedly close to reaching a verbal agreement.

According to journalist Matteo Moretto, the 57-year-old Italian manager is Milan’s preferred choice to replace Sergio Conceicao.

Moretto posted on X: “Milan, close to a verbal agreement with Massimiliano Allegri.

“He is the very first choice of the Rossoneri club, who have accelerated on him in these hours.”

Milan endured a disappointing season, which included a mid-season managerial change and failure to qualify for the Champions League, finishing eighth in Serie A with 63 points.

Conceicao was appointed at the start of the year, succeeding Paulo Fonseca.

Although he led the team to win the Supercoppa Italia in January, the club’s performances in both Serie A and the Coppa Italia were underwhelming.

The club also considered other candidates such as Thiago Motta, but recent reports indicate Allegri has emerged as the leading option.

Allegri previously managed Milan from July 2010 to January 2014, overseeing 178 matches.

During his tenure, the Rossoneri secured 91 wins, 49 draws, and 38 losses, and famously clinched the Serie A title in 2011.

Before the new season kicks off, AC Milan are set to play a series of friendlies against teams including Arsenal, Liverpool, Perth Glory, and Leeds United.
