Arsenal are closing in on the signing of Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad after fending off competition from both Real Madrid and Barcelona.

According to multiple reports, the Gunners have reached an agreement for the 26-year-old midfielder, with only the official announcement pending.

Zubimendi has verbally agreed to personal terms with Arsenal, who are set to trigger his €60million (£51m) release clause.

Earlier this year, it was revealed that Arsenal were in advanced talks with Real Sociedad to secure the defensive midfielder’s signature in the summer.

However, fresh reports in March indicated that Real Madrid had entered the race for the player, alongside Barcelona, who have long been admirers of Zubimendi.

The Spain international has featured in 44 matches for Real Sociedad during the 2024/25 season, scoring two goals and providing two assists across all competitions.

Zubimendi was at the center of a dramatic transfer saga last summer, with the Real Sociedad midfielder seemingly on the verge of joining Liverpool.

The deal appeared to be nearing completion, only for Zubimendi to pull out at the last minute.

Liverpool and sporting director Richard Hughes were left unimpressed by the sudden U-turn.

Reflecting on how he first learned of Liverpool’s interest, Zubimendi said: “I went on vacation, and it caught me by surprise. It wasn’t something I had planned.

“I reacted when the situation arose. It was an uncomfortable time for me, but I weighed the pros and cons and concluded that the best option was to stay.

“I don’t believe in ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ opportunities. If you’re good and want to achieve something, it will come to you.

“There’s no need to rush.”
