Arsenal step up interest in Sporting star Viktor Gyokeres

Arsenal are intensifying their interest in Sporting striker Viktor Gyokeres as they explore options to bolster their attack this summer, according to The Athletic.

Gyokeres has long been admired by Arsenal’s new sporting director, Andrea Berta, whose appointment was confirmed on Sunday, and is expected to be a key target for the club in the upcoming transfer window.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is also a huge fan of Alexander Isak.

However, Newcastle United have no intention of parting with their star player, and it would likely require a significant offer for them to even consider his departure.

The Gunners have also done extensive work on RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko, who could provide a more cost-effective solution.

Yet, it remains unclear whether Arsenal will pursue him, as the 21-year-old Slovenia international has several suitors.

As a result, Gyokeres has emerged as a more prominent candidate than previously expected.

The 26-year-old Sweden international has become one of Europe’s most prolific forwards since his move to Portugal from Coventry City in 2023.

Gyokeres has netted 85 goals and provided 26 assists in 92 appearances for Sporting, helping them secure the Primeira Liga title last season. This campaign, he has scored 30 goals in 26 league matches.

Strengthening their attack is a top priority for Arsenal, especially after season-ending injuries to Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus, leaving Arteta without a recognized centre-forward.

Midfielder Mikel Merino has even been used in that role on an emergency basis.

Arsenal’s pursuit of Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins in the winter transfer market proved unsuccessful, while the club also explored the possibility of loaning AC Milan’s Álvaro Morata, though the striker eventually joined Galatasaray.

Arsenal will return to Premier League action when they take on Fulham at home on Tuesday.
