Bayern Munich are said ot fully focused on renewing the contract of Dayot Upamecano, which is seen as a “priority” by sporting director Max Eberl, amid links with Borussia Dortmund star Nico Schlotterbeck.

Upamecano, who joined Bayern in 2021, will be out of contract next summer, and with several European clubs monitoring his contract situation, Bayern are trying hard to keep one of their key players beyond 2025.

However, French internationals’ high wage demands have made negotiations difficult for the current Bundesliga champions, resulting in Bayern Munich’s contract talks with the player being put on hold early in the month.

The 26-year-old reportedly has several suitors from top European clubs, including Manchester United, Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Liverpool.

Although Bayern chiefs are well aware of this interest, Eberl confirmed that discussions with Upamecano and his representatives are ongoing, describing them as “intensive.”

While the rumours keep surfacing, Eberl says Bayern’s main focus is still on keeping their own stars tied down before thinking about new signings.

Speaking to reporters ahead of the Klassiker against Borussia Dortmund, Bayern director said: “I won’t comment on an opponent’s player before a game like this.

“We have very good central defenders in Kim Min-jae, Jona Tah, and Upa. That’s the big issue for us, Upamecano’s extension. That’s paramount for us. If these issues change, we’ll look at the market.”

Upamecano is reportedly demanding a salary of around €20 million per year, a figure that would make him one of the club’s highest earners.

The French centre-back sees himself as one of the important players at the club and, as such, demands a salary that reflects his quality and leadership skills.

His position comes as no surprise, particularly following reports that teammate Alphonso Davies secured a €17 million signing bonus in his new contract, which extends until 2030.

While they wait for Alphonso Davies to recover from his Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury, Bayern have turned their focus to securing new deals for key players, including Upamecano.

Nevertheless, Bayern are exploring alternatives if negotiations stall, with Borussia Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck emerging as a potential target.
