Black Queens midfielder Stella Nyamekye in contention for CAF Young Player of the Year award

Nyamekye is one of the fastest-rising players in the Black Queens team.

Black Queens attacker Stella Nyamekye has been nominated for the CAF Young Player of the Year award ahead of the 2025 CAF Awards.

The Fort Lauderdale United FC forward earned a place among the ten-woman shortlist following her outstanding performances for Ghana at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

The 20-year-old impressed throughout the tournament, scoring one goal and providing an assist in four matches as the Black Queens reached the semi-finals. Her stunning strike against hosts Morocco nearly sent Ghana to their first WAFCON final in decades, before the team eventually bowed out on penalties.

A former Dreams Ladies FC midfielder, Nyamekye is also a GFA License D Coaching Certificate holder, further highlighting her deep understanding of the game both on and off the pitch.

Nyamekye will compete for the prestigious award against Habiba Essam of Al Ahly and Egypt, Zambia’s Mercy Chipasula and Ruth Mukoma, and Morocco’s Doha El Madani. Also on the shortlist are Tanzania’s Ester Maseke Marwa and Winfrida Gerald, Nigeria’s Shakirat Moshood, Senegal’s Anji Ndiaye, and Egypt’s Habiba Sabry.

CAF is expected to announce the final shortlist and award date in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, Nyamekye is will to join her Black Queens teammates in Ghana as they begin preparations for their WAFCON qualifier against Egypt.
