Chelsea complete €74m double signing of Geovany Quenda and Dario Essugo

Sporting have confirmed an agreement with Chelsea for the transfers of Quenda and Essugo

Chelsea have finalised the signings of Sporting’s Geovany Quenda and Dario Essugo in a combined deal worth €74million, as confirmed by the Portuguese club.

Sporting announced on Wednesday night that they had reached an agreement with the Premier League giants over the transfer of the two highly-rated young talents.

Quenda, the Portuguese winger, will join Chelsea in the summer. The transfer fee for the 20-year-old is reported to be €50.7 million (£42.5million), with an additional €1.3 million (£1.09million) in potential add-ons.

Meanwhile, Essugo, a promising midfielder currently on loan at La Liga side Las Palmas, will cost Chelsea an additional €22.2million (£18.6million).

Essugo will remain with Las Palmas for the remainder of the season before completing his move to Stamford Bridge.

While Chelsea fans will have to wait a bit longer to see Quenda, Essugo could join Enzo Maresca’s side for the inaugural FIFA Club World Cup this summer in the United States.

The Portuguese duo are the latest young players signed by the London club, who have already confirmed the arrival of two other 17-year-olds this summer.

Brazilian Estevao Willian and Ecuadorian Kendry Paez are also set to move to Chelsea in the summer.

Manchester United Were Tracking Quenda

Manchester United were reportedly tracking Geovany Quenda even before Amorim was appointed head coach in November. After spending time in Benfica’s youth academy, Quenda joined Sporting in 2019 at the age of 13.

Amorim quickly recognised Quenda’s potential, and the young player made history by becoming the youngest-ever representative for Sporting’s reserve team at just 16 years old.

At the start of the current season, Quenda was integrated into Sporting’s first team. Amorim praised his performance at right wing-back after the teenager impressed during a pre-season friendly.

“He’s very talented, very mature and understands the game like an adult,’ Amorim told Sporting TV in July.

“He obviously has a lot to improve on, but I think he had an excellent game and we have a player there.”
