Cristiano Ronaldo unlocks another achievment with a brace against Hungary in the 2026 WC qualifiers

The Portuguese football icon Cristiano Ronaldo set a new goalscoring record for his country after scoring a brace against Hungary in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers on Tuesday night, celebrating another milestone achievement.

Ronaldo’s two goals in a 2-2 draw against the Hungarians pushed the superstar’s goals to 41 times in the World Cup qualifying history of the continental tournament.

The Al-Nassr talisman now holds the record previously held by Guatemala striker Carlos Ruiz, who had scored 39 goals in the competition.

The Real Madrid legend equalised for Portugal in the 22nd minute after an eighth-minute lead with a goal from Attila Szalai after Szoboszlai set him up. Ronaldo then netted again just before half-time to put Portugal in the lead in Lisbon.

However, Ronaldo’s goals failed to qualify Portugal in front of their fans. A late equaliser from Dominic Szoboszlai from close range denied the home fans an early celebration and automatic qualification to the 2026 World Cup.

In addition to making World Cup qualifying history, his goals also mean that Ronaldo has now scored 144 times for Portugal and 948 times in total for club and country throughout his remarkable career.

The 40-year-old has previously expressed his ambition to score 1,000 goals before retiring from his remarkable career, and his recent performances have undeniably brought him closer to achieving that goal.

Ronaldo celebrated his latest achievement on social media with a powerful message, expressing joy while emphasising his determination to qualify Portugal for the 2026 World Cup as early as possible.

“It is no secret that representing the National Team means a lot to me, and that is why I am very proud to have reached this unique milestone for Portugal.

“Thank you to everyone who helped me get here. See you in November to seal the qualification for the World Cup!”

Meanwhile, they will have another opportunity to secure their spot in the competition when they resume play on November 13, heading to Dublin to face the Republic of Ireland.
