Desmond Ofei appointed Black Meteors Head Coach

Desmond Offei led the Black Satellites to victory at the 13th African Games in 2023.

Desmond Ofei, the former coach of the Black Satellites, has been appointed as the new head coach of Ghana’s U23 men’s team, the Black Meteors.

This decision highlights the Ghana Football Association’s commitment to ensuring continuity and facilitating the smooth transition of youth players into the senior national team.

Ofei, who currently serves as Assistant Coach of the Black Stars, boasts an impressive record at youth level.

He guided the Black Satellites to gold at the 13th African Games in 2023, secured qualification to the U20 AFCON after a strong WAFU B campaign in Togo, led the team to the U20 AFCON in Egypt, and most recently claimed bronze at the WAFU B U20 Boys Championship in Accra.

He will be supported by experienced assistants Yaw Preko and Baba Nuhu Malam. Preko, a former Ghana international, has managed clubs such as Accra Hearts of Oak, Accra Great Olympics, and Nigerian side Ifenyi Ubah, and recently led Ghana’s U15 boys to gold at the Mondialito Promise Tournament in Israel.

Malam, a seasoned coach and former Black Maidens boss, brings additional expertise from spells with Tamale Utrecht, Bolga All Stars, Real Tamale United, and is currently head coach of Women’s Premier League side Pearlpia Ladies FC.

The rest of the Meteors’ technical setup includes former Asante Kotoko and Medeama SC goalkeeper Montari Tagoe as Goalkeepers Coach, Aduana Stars Welfare Officer Atta Yeboah as Team Manager, Henry Bart-Plange as Team Masseur, and Baba Aluta of Aduana Stars as Equipment Officer.

Eli Vorgbe has been named Video Analyst, introducing modern analytical support to the backroom staff.

On the medical side, Dr. Eric Tetteh will serve as Team Doctor, with Collins Annor as Physiotherapist.

Ofei’s appointment marks a new era for the Black Meteors as they prepare for upcoming international assignments. With his proven credentials at youth level and his ongoing experience with the Black Stars, the Meteors will be aiming for stability, growth, and qualification to major tournaments under his leadership.
