Gennaro Gattuso confident of reaching World Cup as Italy reign begins

Gennaro Gattuso has expressed strong belief that Italy can secure their place in next year’s World Cup, as he begins his tenure as the head coach of the Azzurri. Following the recent dismissal of Luciano Spalletti earlier this month, Gattuso is tasked with turning around Italy’s fortunes after a tough start to qualifying.

Spalletti was sacked after Italy’s heavy 3-0 defeat to Norway, which left the team in a difficult position in Group I. Italy currently faces significant hurdles in their quest to qualify for the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico. With only the group leader earning automatic qualification, Italy finds itself nine points behind Norway, who lead the group.
The Italian team’s recent performances have been disappointing, including conceding at least three goals in the first half of a match for the first time in their history, highlighting their struggles. As a result, Italy’s only realistic chance of qualification now lies in the play-offs, a route they have failed to reach in the last two tournaments.
Despite these setbacks, Gattuso remains optimistic about Italy’s prospects. He believes the team has the talent to succeed, citing that four or five players are among the top in the world in their respective positions.
“We have a good team, but I do mean team. I’m convinced that we can achieve our goal,” Gattuso emphasised.
Gattuso recognizes the pressure the team is under, especially after missing out on qualification for two consecutive World Cups. He aims to create a positive environment at training and instill a sense of belonging among the players.
“My goal is that whoever comes to the training ground comes with great enthusiasm and to create a family,” Gattuso said.
He also stressed the importance of reacting to adversity and giving their best in order to turn their fortunes around and meet their objectives.
The new coach will make his debut in September, leading Italy in their upcoming matches against Estonia in Bergamo and then traveling to Hungary to face Israel.

Gattuso’s leadership will be crucial in the coming months as Italy fights to revive their World Cup dreams. With his conviction and a focus on team unity, many hope he can guide Italy to qualification despite the challenging circumstances they face.
