GFA clears air on Black Stars captaincy structure

The clarification comes after a recent incident during Ghana’s match against Chad at the Accra Sports Stadium

The Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum, has addressed speculation surrounding the captaincy structure of the Black Stars.

In an interview with Metro TV, Asante Twum revealed the official hierarchy, confirming Jordan Ayew as the substantive captain.

“Thomas Partey, Mohammed Kudus, and Alexander Djiku have been appointed as the first, second, and third vice-captains, respectively.”

Asante Twum emphasised that the players are aware of the structure and their roles within it.

The clarification comes after a recent incident during Ghana’s match against Chad at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Thomas Partey appeared surprised when receiving the captain’s armband from Ayew, sparking speculation about potential tension between the players.

However, Asante Twum dismissed these rumors, explaining that Partey’s actions were simply a result of his impending substitution.

Asante Twum also refuted reports suggesting that Thomas Partey had rejected the assistant captain role. He praised the team’s cohesion and reiterated their focus on securing a spot at the World Cup.

Ghana currently sits atop Group I in the World Cup qualifiers with 15 points, three points ahead of second-placed Comoros. With six games played, the Black Stars are well-positioned to advance to the next stage of the qualifiers.

Asante Twum’s clarification provides a welcome resolution to the speculation surrounding the Black Stars’ captaincy structure.

With the team’s hierarchy now clearly defined, Ghana can focus on their ultimate goal: securing a spot at the 2026 World Cup.

The Black Stars will resume their World Cup qualifiers campaign in September with two pivotal matches that will test their mettle. First, they will travel to face Chad in an away fixture, followed by a high-stakes showdown against Mali in Accra.
