GFA Presidential term extension not about Kurt Okraku – Bibiani Goldstars CEO

Kurt Okraku will be eligible to seek a third term when his current mandate ends in 2027

Chief Executive Officer of Bibiani Goldstars, Kwesi Adu, has insisted that the recent extension of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) presidential term limit has nothing to do with incumbent president Kurt Okraku.

His remarks came during the 31st Ordinary Congress in Prampram, where members approved an amendment allowing the GFA president to serve up to three four-year terms, meaning Okraku could contest again when his current mandate ends in 2027.

Speaking to the media, Adu stressed that the decision should not be viewed as being tailored to benefit the current president.

“The extension of the GFA presidential term is not an extension of Kurt Okraku’s term; it is from the GFA,” he said.
“In my opinion, we should remove such modifiers from the system. How can you say that an Executive Council member can go for three terms, but the president can go for two? It’s not about Kurt Okraku; whoever feels capable of managing the affairs of the GFA should come forward.”

The amendment, which takes immediate effect, was overwhelmingly approved, with 114 out of 124 members voting in favour. It means future GFA presidents will be eligible to serve up to three four-year terms.

This change was one of two key items on the agenda. The other was the elevation of the Women’s Football Representative on the GFA Executive Council to the role of Second Vice President a move aimed at strengthening gender representation at the highest level of football governance.

Nyantakyi’s long tenure as GFA president ended following the 2018 Anas exposé, which led to his resignation. Since then, the GFA has embarked on a series of reforms to ensure stability and transparency in its operations.
