Jamie Carragher’s son receives first international call-up from Malta

Jamie Carragher’s son, James Carragher, has received his first ever international call-up, for Malta. This follows James’ solid campaign with Wigan Athletic.

Althoug the centre-back was born in raised in Liverpool, the city in which his dad represented over the years, it was announced in February 2025 that Carragher had been granted citizenship of Malta as a result of his great grandfather’s descent.

Now, he’s been officially called up to represent the country in there upcoming international matches.

Carving out his own path as a professional footballer, James joined Liverpool’s academy in 2011, spending six years with the club before moving to Wigan Athletic in 2017.

Apart from loan stints at Oldham Athletic during the 2022/23 season and Inverness Caledonian Thistle in 2023/24, he has spent his entire senior career with Wigan.

This season, however, has been his breakthrough, establishing himself as a key player in Wigan’s first team with 22 appearances in League One.

His dad also spent his entire career with Liverpool in the top flight. He won a handful of trophies, including the Champions League and his performances with the Reds earned him multiple international caps.
