Legon Cities sack coach Yaw Acheampong

Yaw Acheampong was sacked at Aduana Stars earlier this season

Legon Cities have terminated the contract of head coach Yaw Acheampong as the team intensifies its fight against relegation in the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League season.

Acheampong, who took the reins in January after Paa Kwasi Fabin’s resignation, failed to turn the team’s fortunes around, with a string of poor results, including a 1-0 loss to Basake Holy Stars, ultimately leading to his dismissal.

The former Aduana Stars coach was brought in as a risk, given his previous dismissal from Aduana earlier in the season.

However, Legon Cities had hoped his experience would stabilize the team.

With only five games left, the club has appointed Tijani Abdul Rahim, former assistant to Maxwell Konadu and one-time head coach of Young Apostles, to take charge and guide the team to safety.

This marks the second time Acheampong has been sacked this season, having previously been let go by Aduana Stars at the beginning of the campaign.

His tenure at Legon Cities was marked by a series of underwhelming performances, which ultimately led to his dismissal.

Legon Cities are desperate to avoid relegation, currently occupying the 17th spot with 25 points after 29 games.

Their upcoming fixtures are tough, and it would take a miracle for them to escape the drop.

They face a challenging run-in, with matches against Bechem United, Nations FC, Aduana Stars, Hearts of Oak, and Dreams FC.

Acheampong, a former Ghanaian international with a wealth of coaching experience, has previously guided teams such as Medeama, Elmina Sharks, and Eleven Wonders, among others.

Despite his experience, he was unable to replicate success at Legon Cities.
