Lionel Messi’s bodyguard banned by MLS from pitchside duties

Lionel Messi’s bodyguard, Yassine Cheuko, can no longer assist the Inter Miami superstar in the same way as before, following a ban imposed by Major League Soccer (MLS).
Cheuko, a former Navy SEAL, has been by Messi’s side since the Argentine legend’s move to the United States in 2023.
At that time, it was determined that the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner required personal security while in America.

Cheuko has been a constant presence at Messi’s matches, often stepping in to deal with pitch-invading fans eager to get close to their idol.
Many supporters have been intercepted before reaching the field.

However, MLS has recently imposed restrictions on Cheuko’s involvement, limiting his role to providing security behind the scenes. He is now prohibited from stepping onto the pitch during matches.
He has told House of Highlights: “They don’t allow me to be on the field anymore.”
“I arrived in the United States, and in 20 months of work, 16 people have already invaded the pitch. There’s a huge problem here. I’m not the problem. Let me help Messi.
“I love MLS and CONCACAF, but we have to work together. I love helping.”

Messi will continue to have Cheuko by his side when attending games across various competitions. The martial arts expert has become a key member of his family’s security detail.
“I feel like I’m part of his family, and I’m working hard to protect him, not only physically but also psychologically, because he trusts me a lot and depends on me, and I give him all my attention,” Cheuko added.
“He’s very humble.”
Messi made his return to action for Inter Miami in their latest fixture, following a period of limited involvement with both club and country.
He came off the bench to score in a 2-1 win over the Philadelphia Union and could feature in the upcoming CONCACAF Champions Cup quarter-final clash against LAFC on Wednesday.
