Liverpool edge closer to Premier League title with late win over West Ham

The result puts Liverpool 13 points clear of second-placed Arsenal

Liverpool moved within touching distance of the Premier League title after securing a dramatic 2-1 victory over West Ham United at Anfield.

The Reds’ hard-fought victory means that if Arsenal lose at Ipswich next weekend, the Reds can clinch the Premier League title with a win over Leicester.

Mohamed Salah, who signed a new two-year contract with the club earlier this week, set up the opening goal with a sublime pass for Luis Díaz, who found the net in the 18th minute.

Despite taking the lead, Liverpool failed to capitalise on their momentum, and West Ham deservedly drew level when Andy Robertson inadvertently turned the ball into his own net.

But in the 90th minute, Virgil van Dijk – expected to follow Salah in committing his future to the club – rose highest to head home from a corner, securing a crucial win.

The result puts Liverpool 13 points clear of second-placed Arsenal with just six league games remaining.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Van Dijk said: “These things [the own goal] unfortunately happen and it was time to make it right.

“On to the next one. I am very happy to captain my 100th game for Liverpool, it was an emotional day with Hillsborough and that was the main focus. One step closer to all our dreams.

“Everyone knows how much I love this club and let’s see what next week will look like.”

Mohamed Salah, who set a new Premier League goal involvements record, added: “I was on the bench, it is worse there! We got there in the end, which is the most important thing.

“They are a good team with a good plan. They managed to score and at that stage, the most important thing is to win the game.

“I am glad we managed to do that [contract] before the end of the season. Hopefully, Virgil will be next.

“He can do whatever he wants but I would love to play with him next season.”
