Liverpool reject Barcelona approach to buy Luis Diaz

Diaz is top of Barca’s wish list as the La Liga champions look to strengthen their squad

Liverpool have rejected Barcelona’s attempt to sign Luis Diaz in the summer transfer window, according to The Athletic.

The online news portal claims that “the Catalan club and their sporting director Deco were immediately informed that no appetite exists to trade a squad member who head coach Arne Slot is planning with for the 2025-26 season.”

Diaz played an instrumental role for Arne Slot’s side as they secured a record-equalling 20th league title.

The Colombia international racked up 50 appearances, scored 17 goals, and provided assists last season, featuring in an unfamiliar No.9 position.

It is believed that Hansi Flick’s side have already held talks with the 28-year-old, who is also attracting interest from the Saudi Pro League clubs, but the Reds have told the La Liga champions he is not for sale.

Luis Diaz, who joined Liverpool from Porto in 2022, has just two years left on his contract, and talks over a new deal have yet to progress.

Speaking to Telemundo last month regarding his contract, he said: “Since the first day I arrived, I’ve always been happy, calm, enjoying the football played at this great team.

“We’ll be talking about [renewing], we’ll talk about it. For me, I’d stay however many years it takes. It also depends on the club, everything.

“These are details that are worked out separately. But I’m very calm, happy and enjoying the Premier League.”

The Athletic further disclosed that “at Diaz’s age, their current preference would be to maximise his performance value – even if that means exiting as a free agent – unless Liverpool receive bids that enable them to land a replacement of similar or superior quality.”
