Liverpool seal record deal for Newcastle star Alexander Isak

Alexander Isak is expected to complete his Liverpool medical on Monday

Liverpool have reportedly finalized a British record transfer deal with a fixed fee of £125 million to sign Newcastle United star Alexander Isak on transfer deadline day, following months of negotiations, according to Sky Sports News.

Liverpool’s earlier £110 million bid for the Swedish international was rejected by Newcastle this month, suggesting poor timing and the Magpies’ desire for a higher fee for their star striker.

Negotiations intensified on Sunday night, leading to an agreement between the clubs, with the Swedish striker expected to arrive on Merseyside on Monday morning to sign a six-year contract.

The overall deal is expected to be worth £130 million, while the sale has been sanctioned by the club’s Saudi owners.

The Magpies had been open to exploring his exit all summer, after Isak made it clear at the end of last season that he wanted to leave for the Premier League winners.

However, as a club statement two weeks ago indicated, their ‘conditions of sale’—an acceptable offer from Liverpool and the securing of Isak’s replacements—had not been met.

Newcastle had hoped to convince the 25-year-old to remain at St James’ Park. However, after a senior delegation from the ownership visited his home last week to make a final appeal, they accepted it was not feasible.

Reports indicate that the Swedish striker had informed co-owner Jamie Reuben and PIF chiefs that he would remain on strike and wanted to leave the Carabao Cup winners.

Contrary to some media reports suggesting the deal was off, negotiations for his departure have continued behind the scenes all week, with the player’s agent Vlado Lemic playing a pivotal role.

Late Sunday evening, a package was finally agreed upon between the clubs. Isak was sensational for Eddie Howe’s side, scoring 27 goals across all competitions in the 2024/25 season.

Meanwhile, Newcastle have secured Germany striker Nick Woltemade for a club-record £69 million from VfB Stuttgart and remain optimistic about adding Yoane Wissa, though Brentford’s £65 million asking price currently poses a significant threat.
