Man United boss Ruben Amorim addresses Viktor Gyokeres transfer links

Gyokeres has been in sensational form this season for Sporting Lisbon

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has revealed that he has not held any discussions with transfer target Viktor Gyokeres regarding a potential move to Old Trafford.

Gyokeres has been in sensational form this season for Sporting Lisbon – the club Amorim left to take the United job in November – and is attracting widespread interest across Europe.

United are among the clubs monitoring the Swedish striker, whose release clause is reportedly around £60million.

However, Premier League rivals Arsenal are currently seen as the frontrunners to land his signature.

Gyokeres has enjoyed a prolific campaign, scoring an astonishing 52 goals in 48 appearances.

Reports suggest that the former Coventry City forward has compiled a shortlist of clubs he would consider joining this summer, with a clear ambition to play Champions League football.

Amorim, however, has sent a pointed message to his former player, warning that if his sole priority is competing in Europe’s elite competition, he should look elsewhere.

Despite a poor domestic campaign, United still have a chance to qualify for the Champions League by winning the Europa League this month – an achievement that would also strengthen their position in the transfer market.

For now, though, Amorim has downplayed the possibility of a Gyokeres reunion at Old Trafford, saying a move is not currently on the agenda.

“I didn’t talk to him,” the United manager told Portuguese broadcaster Sport TV.

“But if a player only wants to come to Man United to play Champions League, then he won’t come. We want players who want to represent United, not players who want to play certain competitions.”

Amorim’s comments follow new Sporting manager Rui Borges’ admission that Viktor Gyokeres’ time in Lisbon may soon come to an end.

“Viktor is a player. I think there are no words,” Borges said last month.

“It is unlikely that another player of his quality will emerge in our league over the next few years. He is clearly above average. Sporting recognised his talent, and here we are.

“Fortunately, we have him at Sporting. We must make the most of the time we have with him because he is truly exceptional.

“I have said this before, and I will continue to say it: he brings a lot to the team, and his teammates are aware of what he contributes, which is why they look for him during games.

“The collective effort also plays a role, as no one can succeed alone. Viktor is a game-changer, and he will continue to be, whether with us or elsewhere. His quality is undeniable; it is phenomenal.”
