Early assessment fears the 29-year-old will miss six to eight weeks of action, pushing him to the brink of making the curtain-raiser against Arsenal on Sunday, August 17.

The Red Devils are optimistic that Onana will be available before the start of the campaign and have Altay Bayındır as No. 2, with Tom Heaton also back-up after extending his contract at Old Trafford.

Onana moved to Man United from Inter Milan in a deal worth £47.2million in 2023, however, he has been guilty of high-profile errors.

The Cameroon international was dropped by Amorim in April after a poor display against Lyon in the Europa League, then rotated him on the final day of the Premier League season.

United have been linked with a move for Porto shot-stopper Diogo Costa, but they will face fierce competition from arch-rivals Manchester City.

It is believed that the club’s scouting network had been monitoring Costa’s performances last season, with representatives attending Porto’s match against Famalicão at the Estádio do Dragão to observe the 25-year-old in action.

However, Man United are not the only club eyeing the talented shot-stopper.

Man City are also reportedly preparing a move for Costa, as they look to reinforce their goalkeeper options in light of Ederson’s struggles with recurring injuries last term.
