Manchester United legend Ruud Van Nistelrooy is reportedly set to be sacked by Leicester City after an abysmal showing, sending the club to Premier League relegation.

Reports indicate that the former United forward Van Nistelrooy is set to be shown the exit door after the season, with his replacement already lined up.

Leicester are reported to be keen on changing their manager, with former Southampton boss Russell Martin expected to take over as their new head coach, according to the Daily Mail.

Ongoing discussions between Martin and Leicester’s board have progressed steadily and are now nearing completion.

Meanwhile, Van Nistelrooy, who has been asked to leave, has been working behind the scenes to prepare the club for life in the Championship, but is caught in limbo with the lack of support from the club’s chiefs.

Van Nistelrooy failed to keep the Foxes in the top-flight after assuming the role in January, having parted ways with his former side, United.

Leicester are revealed to have zeroed in on a permanent replacement for the Dutch manager, but also faces financial issues that could significantly dent the club’s ambitions going into the English second tier.

The Foxes have been referred to an independent commission following allegations of breaching the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) during the 2023/24 season.

If found guilty, Leicester could face a points deduction next season, adding further pressure on the incoming manager and the squad.

With Van Nistelrooy reportedly being shown the exit door, the club will turn its focus towards appointing a manager with Championship experience rather than taking a chance on a big-name manager.

In that regard, Martin’s proven record in guiding a club through the rigours of the Championship with Southampton could be pivotal.

His ability to bring the squad on board and to buy into his ideas and push for promotion under pressure will be paramount, particularly if Leicester start the campaign with a point deduction due to a PSR-related penalty.
