Michael Carrick agrees to take the United caretaker role until the rest of the season

Michael Carrick emerges as as top of the list for the united role

Former Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has reportedly reached a verbal agreement with the club to assume the vacant head coach role for the rest of the season.

According to Sky Sports, the 44-year-old is expected to lead the club following the sacking of Portuguese manager Ruben Amorim in the middle of the season.

United held talks with both Carrick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, but opted for the ex-midfielder to assume the vacant dugout until the summer.

Details of the contract are being ironed out by representatives of both parties, with Carrick expected to sign all paperworks later on Tuesday afternoon.

Jonny Evans, Jonathan Woodgate and Travis Binnion are expected to be part of Carrick’s backroom staff. Woodgate was Carrick’s second in command at Boro, while Evans and Binnion have been assisting Darren Fletcher for the games against Burnley and Brighton last week.

However, news coming in rather indicates that Fletcher has turned down the chance to be part of Carrick’s backroom staff. He would rather return to the Under-18s.

The Scot was given the option to remain on the first-team coaching staff under Carrick, but he has chosen instead to step back and resume his role as Under-18s head coach for the remainder of the season.

Carrick quickly emerged as the clear frontrunner after a highly impressive face-to-face meeting with chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox last Thursday. He will take charge for the first time in Saturday’s blockbuster Manchester derby at Old Trafford.
