The resignation comes amid a heated dispute surrounding Lewandowski’s removal as team captain and the subsequent fallout between the two.

Lewandowski, Poland’s all-time leading goal scorer, expressed deep hurt and feelings of betrayal over the manner in which Probierz informed him of his captaincy being taken away.

The 36-year-old Barcelona forward revealed he received a brief call from Probierz while he was putting his children to bed, and shortly afterward, a statement was published online announcing the change in captaincy, replacing Lewandowski with midfielder Piotr Zielinski.

The decision to strip Lewandowski of his captaincy has sparked widespread controversy in Poland. Probierz justified his move by stating he believed it was the right time for a leadership change to benefit the team.

However, Lewandowski criticized the handling of the situation, emphasizing that the communication was unprofessional and that it damaged the trust built over many years of representing his country.

Following the fallout, Probierz announced his resignation, citing the current circumstances as the reason for stepping down in a formal statement.

“I have come to the conclusion that in the current situation the best decision for the good of the national team will be my resignation from the position of coach”, Michal Probierz mention.
