Newcastle United keen on Brentford talisman Bryan Mbeumo

Newcastle have been monitoring Bryan Mbeumo closely for several years

Newcastle United are keen on signing Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo but are uncertain if they can meet the asking price for the 25-year-old, according to the Telegraph.

Mbeumo’s versatility makes him an attractive target for Newcastle. He can play on the right wing or through the middle, offering the type of flexibility manager Eddie Howe desires in his attacking players.

The winger has impressed Newcastle’s recruitment team, and Howe is eager to bring him to St James’ Park, should Brentford be willing to sell this summer.

Newcastle have been monitoring Bryan Mbeumo closely for several years, and with just two years left on his contract, there is an expectation that Brentford may entertain offers.

However, Newcastle are likely to wait until they know which European competition they will be competing in next season before making a formal approach.

Howe’s side are guaranteed at least a spot in the Europa Conference League after winning the Carabao Cup.

They are currently third in the Premier League, just two points ahead of sixth-place Nottingham Forest, who face Brentford this evening.

Mbeumo has been a prominent figure in Newcastle’s recruitment discussions and is viewed as an ideal addition.

However, the club must weigh up whether they can reach an agreement on a deal.

The Cameroon international has enjoyed a stellar season in the Premier League, netting 18 goals and providing six assists in 33 appearances.

However, Brentford’s asking price of over £60million may cause Newcastle to hesitate, especially considering their need for reinforcements in other areas.

Additionally, competition from other Premier League clubs could drive up the price.

Newcastle have made steady progress in compiling a list of transfer targets for the summer, with priority positions including a goalkeeper and a centre-back.

The club are also in search of a striker to challenge Alexander Isak. Newcastle are among several clubs interested in Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap.

Given the financial considerations, it seems unlikely they could secure both Mbeumo and Delap in the same window while also bringing in a goalkeeper and a centre-back unless they offload some players.

Asked about the likelihood of Mbeumo leaving at the end of the season, Brentford manager Thomas Frank said: “I think it’s pretty high [the asking price], no matter what, if I’m honest.

“But, as you know, he’s very happy here at Brentford.”
