‘No offers’ received for Viktor Gyokeres – Sporting club president Frederico Varandas

Viktor Gyokere still waits for an official approach from either Arsenal or Man United over a summer move

Viktor Gyokeres has been hot on the list of several clubs looking to bolster their attack for next season, with Manchester United and Arsenal placing him on their top list.

However, Sporting club president Frederico Varandas has revealed that they have received “no offers” from any of these clubs to that effect. He would rather note that the Swedish international will be allowed to leave for less than his release clause.

The 27-year-old prolific striker has a release clause of €100 million, which could, however, repel suitors from approaching this summer.

Despite his hefty pricetag, United are believed to have made approaches through intermediaries to explore the conditions of a potential deal.

As it stands, Sporting have not received any offers for Gyokeres and the striker will not be allowed to leave for £59m (€70m) this summer, club president Frederico Varandas said on Wednesday morning.

Sporting club president, Varandas, has dispelled any existence of a “gentleman’s agreement” with Gyokeres’ agent that potentially allows United and Arsenal target to leave for a fixed fee of £50.8m (€60m) plus £8.4m (€10m) in add-ons.

Rumours in Portugal have claimed that Gyokeres has told Sporting he is ready to leave the club because he feels disappointed they have not honored their promise.

Gyokeres has enjoyed a stellar season, scoring 54 goals in 52 appearances across all competitions for Sporting

Meanwhile, Varandas is optimistic about approving a deal less than the player’s €100 million release clause, but has made clear there will be an open negotiation.

Gyokeres scored 54 goals in 52 games for Sporting last season, placing him only second to European Golden Boot award winner Kylian Mbappe, who scored more(62 points).

“I can guarantee that Viktor Gyokeres will not leave for 60m euros plus 10m euros because I never promised that,” said Varandas.

“To this day, Sporting has not received an offer for Gyokeres – neither today nor last summer.”

There appears to be insufficient communication between the player’s agent and the club president, with Gyokeres’ agent relying on assurances made by the former sporting director, Hugo Viana, who has since departed to join Manchester City.

Varandas added: “What was agreed in that meeting? That Sporting would not demand the release clause [this summer].

“For one reason, it was because we know no player leaves Portugal at 27 for €100m or €90m euros.

The Portuguese League champions signed Gyokeres two years ago for around £20m from Coventry. He bagged 40 goals in 97 games after joining Coventry from Brighton in 2021.

He would go on to score 97 times in 102 games for Sporting in all competitions since his arrival in 2023, and become one of the most coveted strikers in Europe.

Manchester United have made an initial approach – through intermediaries – over a potential reunion with his former boss Ruben Amorim. The Gunners have also not hidden their interest as they aim to strengthen their attack.
