‘Putting the ball in the back of the net is solely on the players’ – Kotoko coach Karim Zito

Kotoko are now yet to score more than one goal in their last 10 league games

Asante Kotoko interim coach Karim Zito has attributed the team’s struggles in front of goal to the players’ ability to finish chances, following their 0-0 draw against Hearts of Oak in the Ghana Premier League on Sunday.

Despite dominating possession and creating scoring opportunities, Kotoko were unable to break the deadlock, with second-half substitute Saaka Dauda’s angled finish going wide of the post.

Kotoko are now yet to score more than one goal in their last 10 league games, a worrying trend for the Porcupine Warriors.

Despite opting for high-scoring strikers Albert Amoah and Kwame Opoku, the team has struggled to find the back of the net.

Zito, who took charge of the club two weeks ago, has been working on the team’s finishing, but believes it’s ultimately up to the players to put the ball in the net.

“Putting the ball in the net is the ability and capability of the player,” Zito said. “We teach them how to score. Every match we play, we practice in the training ground before.

“Friday, I did finishing. I do finishing, finishing. Because, when I came, I saw that finishing was the problem.”

Despite lying fourth in the league standings, Karim Zito remains optimistic about Kotoko’s title chances.

“So now, we are creating, we are left to put the ball in the back of the net. So, this is where we have reached now. The next game you’ll see,” he added.

The coach insists that his team will go all out to achieve their goals.

Kotoko will turn their attention to the MTN FA Cup this weekend when they face Berekum Chelsea at the TNA Park in the semi-final.

The Porcupine Warriors would be hoping to beat the Berekum-based club to get closer to winning the ultimate trophy.

Zito’s team will look to make a strong impression in the FA Cup after a string of disappointing results in the league.
