Sir Jim Ratcliffe names one manager Man United should never have appointed

Manchester United have struggled to replace Sir Alex Ferguson since his departure

Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has identified the one managerial appointment the club should have never made.

Since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013 – after guiding United to a record-extending 13th Premier League title – 10 different managers, including caretakers and interim bosses, have taken charge at Old Trafford.

All have aimed to restore the club to the summit of English football. All have fallen short.

Now overseeing all football operations at United, billionaire Ratcliffe is hopeful that his first managerial appointment, Ruben Amorim, will finally change the club’s fortunes.

The INEOS chief made the decision to part ways with Erik ten Hag, despite having inherited him and awarding him a new four-year contract just last summer.

Ratcliffe admitted earlier this week that extending Ten Hag’s tenure was a mistake.

David Moyes was sacked just 10 months after succeeding Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United.

However, he believes the club’s biggest managerial misstep was appointing Ferguson’s hand-picked successor, David Moyes.

According to Ratcliffe, Moyes should never have been given the job in the first place.

“Look, I like David Moyes, and I think he’s a really good manager, but to go from Sir Alex Ferguson to Moyes is not where I would have gone,” Ratcliffe said in an interview with The Times.

“Moyes stepped into the shoes of Ferguson, who’s won the Premier League 13 times, who won the Champions League twice and then you’re handing over to a guy that has never managed big players and had never won anything.”
