Sports Minister questions Otto Addo’s performance despite Black Stars’ World Cup lead

Otto Addo has been told to do more to convince Ghanaians

Sports Minister Kofi Iddie Adams has expressed mixed feelings about Black Stars head coach Otto Addo’s performance with the national team.

Otto Addo has come under pressure following Ghana’s 1-1 draw with Chad and their unconvincing 1-0 victory over Mali on Monday in Accra.

Speaking on Cit FM this morning , the Minister said that while Otto Addo has guided Ghana to the top of Group I in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, he remains unconvinced by the overall output of the team.

“Very soon AFCON will start in Morocco. Is Ghana going to be there? No,”.

He added: “We have not qualified for the World Cup yet… so if I tell you that I am impressed, then it means I don’t know my job. I am not; there is a lot of room for improvement. Even when you meet the coach himself, he admits that he got things wrong and takes responsibility. But the question is: for how long will you continue to take blame for wrong decisions?” he asked.

The Sports Minister, however, acknowledged that Otto Addo has taken responsibility for the Black Stars’ performances and must do more to convince Ghanaians.

Ghana currently leads Group I with 19 points from eight matches, six wins, one draw, and a loss, their latest victory being a 1-0 triumph over Mali at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The Black Stars will wrap up their qualification with a game against Central Africa and Comoros in October.
