Tottenham fear losing James Maddison for rest of season

Maddison has undergone scans, with the results expected within the next 24 hours

Tottenham Hotspur are facing a major blow with midfielder James Maddison potentially ruled out for the rest of the season due to a “significant” knee injury.

Maddison started in Spurs’ 3-1 win over Bodo/Glimt last Thursday but was forced off the pitch after sustaining the injury.

The England international was absent from the Tottenham squad for their Premier League match against West Ham on Sunday, with both players sidelined for treatment.

According to talkSPORT, Maddison has undergone scans, with the results expected within the next 24 hours.

The report suggests that the North London club are concerned the England international could be out for the long term, with his absence potentially extended if surgery is required.

Postecoglou said after the West Ham game: “It doesn’t look great but we’re just waiting for further information.

“We’ll just wait and see. Hopefully we’ll probably get some clarity [on Monday].

Dominic Solanke, who secured the win in midweek, was absent against the Hammers due to a knock.

However, Postecoglou sounded more optimistic about the striker’s chances of featuring in the return leg in Norway.

Postecoglou told BBC Sport: “Dom is improving. We expect him to be OK for Thursday. We just left him out [against West Ham] to recover more.”

“But the medical team are pretty confident he should be right for Thursday.”

Spurs had been hoping to secure a place in the Europa League final after a strong first-leg victory over Bodo/Glimt, but Maddison’s absence will be a significant blow if he is sidelined for an extended period.

Tottenham could face Manchester United in the final, with the Red Devils holding a 3-0 lead going into the second leg of their semi-final against Athletic Club at Old Trafford.
