Julian Alvarez says Argentina showed their best selves with ‘humility and hard work’ to humiliate Brazil at Estadio Monumental on Wednesday night in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier.
Alvarez opened the scoring for the world champions on the night before the likes of Enzo Fernandez, Alexis Mac Allister and Guillermo Simeone placed the nail on its head.
Prior to the game, FC Barcelona marksman Raphinha spoke to Brazil legend Romario and both of them candidly stated they were gonna beat Argentina while taking a little dig at Lionel Scaloni’s side.

Speaking to the press after the game, Alvarez explained the approach of Argentina and their mentality for the match, revealing that they were leaned more towards getting the result than focusing on the noise.
“I just think with humility and hard work. We played a great game and surely handed them a lesson”
The win means Argentina extend their lead at the summit of the South American World Cup qualification standings with 26 points- six more than their rivals Brazil who sit fourth on the table.
