Harry Kane provided a goal and an assist as Bayern Munich secured a 2-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen in the Round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League.
For the first time since the 2020-21 season, Bayern Munich have completed the double against Leverkusen in a single campaign(3-0 in the first leg and 2-0 at the Bay Arena)
Wirtz Absence Felt
Ahead of the tie, Xabi Alonso’s side was dealt a huge blow after Florian Wirtz suffered an ankle injury. Wirtz, who has had the most goal contributions for Leverkusen in the UCL (6 goals and 1 assist), was missed as Leverkusen failed to convert their 17 shots and 3 big chances.
However, Harry Kane and Davies ensured that Bayern earned a 2-0 victory against a fierce rival.
A piece of piece of history chalked
Bayern Munich’s 5-0 aggregate win is the biggest in an all-German tie in the knockout stages of a European competition since the 1998-99 season, when Bayern themselves won 6-0 in the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League against 1. FC Kaiserslautern (2-0 at home, 4-0 away).
This is Bayer Leverkusen’s heaviest defeat to nil on aggregate in a European knockout stage tie (0-5) — only Barcelona in 2011-12 have they been beaten by a bigger overall margin in the knockout stages of a European competition.
Inter Milan awaits in the Quarterfinals
Vincent Kompany will face an old foe when his side comes up against Inter Milan in the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League.
