Ghana legend Samuel Osei Kuffuor hits back at Jamie Carragher over AFCON comments

Carragher claimed that AFCON is not a major competition

Ghana and Bayern Munich legend Samuel Osei Kuffuor has fired back at Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher over recent comments about the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The former Liverpool defender appeared to downplay the significance of the AFCON in a now-viral remark made on Sky Sports following Liverpool’s victory over Manchester City earlier this month.

Jamie Carragher has admitted he was wrong to dismiss the Africa Cup of Nations as not a ‘major tournament

Carragher’s comments were widely criticised, particularly by former internationals from various African nations.

The latest to respond is Osei Kuffuor, who didn’t hold back in an interview with Accra-based Sporty FM.

“What has Carragher achieved in football? If we mention the best 2,000 defenders in the world, Carragher won’t be part!” he said.

“Do you think anyone will look at Carragher as a role model [in football] and name [their children] after him?”

Osei Kuffuor went on to question whether Jamie Carragher was truly good enough to play for Premier League giants Liverpool.

“If he wasn’t born in Liverpool, I doubt he’d have got the chance to play for them,” the former UEFA Champions League winner with Bayern Munich added.

“Imagine he was born in Italy, would he have been good enough to play for Milan, Real Madrid, Barcelona or even Bayern Munich? No, he wouldn’t have.”
