The 18-year-old departed Egypt on Wednesday morning after playing in Ghana’s opening two matches at the tournament
Desmond Ofei optimistic about Jerry Afriyie’s return to Black Satellites

Black Satellites head coach Desmond Ofei is hopeful that forward Jerry Afriyie can rejoin the team during the ongoing U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
Afriyie featured in Ghana’s opening two group games against DR Congo and Senegal but returned to his club CD Lugo in Spain due to a pre-agreed arrangement between the Ghana Football Association and the Spanish third-tier side.

The agreement allowed Afriyie to participate in only the first two group matches, and with Ghana preparing for a crucial final Group C clash against the Central African Republic, coach Ofei acknowledged Afriyie’s absence will be felt.
However, he remains optimistic about his possible return.
“Jerry Afriyie is a true leader both on and off the field. He’s a fantastic talent, and we knew it would be difficult to have him for the whole tournament,” Ofei said.
“We’ll try our best to bring him back at the right time. Hopefully, he won’t be away for long—we expect him back soon, and in his absence, we’ll continue to make him proud.”
Afriyie made a notable impact during his brief time at the tournament.
He featured as a substitute in Ghana’s 1-1 draw with DR Congo and delivered a decisive contribution in the team’s 1-0 victory over defending champions Senegal, providing the crucial assist for Emmanuel Mensah’s winning goal.
His absence will be deeply felt, as Afriyie has been a pivotal figure in Ghana’s U20 setup over the past two years, known for his creativity, pace, and ability to influence key moments.
Coach Ofei must now rethink his attacking strategy for the final group match against the Central African Republic.
Afriyie’s stock has risen rapidly in recent months, making his senior debut for Ghana earlier this year and scoring in an AFCON qualifier against Niger.
He joined Lugo on loan from Saudi side Al Qadsiah and has netted twice in seven appearances for the Spanish club.
Despite Afriyie’s potential absence, Ghana has already secured a place in the quarterfinals of the tournament following results from other groups.
