Liverpool breaks the bank to sign Alexander Isak on a six-year deal

Liverpool sign Alexander isak from Newcastle United

Liverpool have completed the signing of Newcastle United star Alexander Isak for a British record fee of £125 million on transfer deadline day, according to reports from the club.

Isak will sign a six-year contract, securing the Swedish international at Anfield until 2031, with Liverpool splashing out to acquire one of the Premier League‘s top forwards.

Liverpool have secured their target after intense negotiations, overcoming an initial rejection of their £110 million bid for the former Real Sociedad forward by Newcastle, who cited the bid’s timing and their demand for a higher fee as reasons for the refusal.

Isak’s transfer to Liverpool breaks the British record previously set by Chelsea’s £115 million signing of Moisws Caicedo two years ago, while also surpassing Liverpool’s own £116 million record for German star Florian Wirtz earlier this summer.

The 25-year-old arrived on Merseyside late Monday morning, underwent a two-part medical, and posed for photos at the AXA Training Centre before leaving mid-afternoon on a flight to join his international teammates in Sweden.

Indeed, it was worth the wait after a stellar campaign last season that saw him score 23 goals in the Premier League, while helping Eddie Howe’s side to lift the Carabao Cup – the club’s first major trophy in many years.

He is expected to wear the No. 9 jersey at Anfield after signing for the Premier League champions.

Isak, beaming with joy after signing for the Reds, said: “It’s been a long journey to get here. But I’m super-happy to be a part of this team, this club and everything it stands for. It’s something I’m proud of and I’m really looking forward to it.”

Since joining Newcastle from Sociedad in 2022, Isak made 109 appearances across all competitions, scoring 62 goals. This includes 54 goals in 86 Premier League matches, with 23 last season, placing him second behind Mohamed Salah in the Golden Boot race.

Speaking after completing the move, he added: “I think I have a lot to give, I think I have a lot to improve. I’m a striker, but I always want to give as much as possible to the team, mainly goals, but much more than that as well. I want to win everything.”
