Andre Onana left out of Man United squad for Newcastle clash

Onana came under heavy criticism following his performance against Lyon

Andre Onana has been omitted from Manchester United’s squad for Sunday’s Premier League match against Newcastle.

The Cameroonian came under heavy criticism following his performance in Thursday’s 2-2 draw against Lyon in the Europa League, where he was at fault for both goals.

The scrutiny intensified after former United midfielder Nemanja Matic branded him “one of the worst goalkeepers in the club’s history” just a day prior to the game.

It is believed that the decision was made to allow the Cameroon international to “rest and disconnect” following a difficult week.

Despite his absence, Onana is expected to return for the second leg of the Europa League quarter-final against Lyon at Old Trafford on Thursday. He has been assured that the decision is not permanent.

Turkey international Altay Bayındır is set to deputise for Onana at Newcastle, marking just his sixth appearance of the season and his first in the Premier League.

Bayındır has not featured since January, having only played in domestic cup competitions so far this campaign.

Since the beginning of last season, Onana has made eight errors leading to goals in all competitions – the most of any goalkeeper representing a Premier League club.

United boss Ruben Amorim defended the 29-year-old after the Lyon match, stating that he himself had made more mistakes this season than the under-fire shot-stopper.

Onana has struggled to justify his £47million price tag since joining from Inter Milan in 2023, facing growing scrutiny over his performances.
