Barcelona have eventually revealed Frankie de Jong’s new release clause following negotiations for a new contract.

The new deal is expected to come with a reduced clause to attract interest from suitors, especially from the Premier League Clubs. The Dutchman’s new contract is seen as similar to Ronald Araujo’s new contract.

According to Football Espana, Sporting Director Deco is looking to replicate the strategy used in Ronald Araujo’s deal, adding a release clause that clubs could afford.

The 27-year-old has experienced a frustrating start to the 2024-25 season as he dealt with ankle issues, but has bounced back in recent months with style to convince Hansi Flick for more playing time.

His solid performances in midfield, together with Pedri and Dani Olmo, have convinced Barca’s sporting department of the former Feyenoord man’s continuity.

The idea is for de Jong to stay with Barca, and this has been the idea for over two seasons now amid strong speculations of his departure, and Manchester United being linked with the player in almost every transfer window.

A reported release clause of €80m will be included in his new deal, as the same reports indicate that de Jong’s agent, Ali Dursan, met with a deco in February to discuss a new deal.

Barcelona seek to avoid past friction with the player concerning his contract and release clause, hence the need to iron out all the necessary issues for a smooth transition should clubs come calling for his signature.

Barcelona are battling off-field issues with balancing their books financially and will be looking at finding appropriate means of raising more income and cutting down costs, and placing the Catalan Club in a strong position.

Flick’s men are currently level on points with Real Madrid at the top of the table, albeit with a game in hand.

Barcelona will face Osasuna on Thursday, March 27, in their La Liga match day 28 fixture, but while his future remains up for debate, de Jong will be expected to play a part in that game.
