Head coach of Ghana’s women’s national team, Kim Lars Björkegren, has been shortlisted for the Women’s Coach of the Year award ahead of the 2025 CAF Awards, following his impressive impact since taking charge of the Black Queens.

Despite joining the team only months before the tournament, Björkegren transformed the Black Queens into serious continental contenders. Ghana narrowly missed out on a place in the final after a heartbreaking penalty shootout loss to Morocco.

Björkegren faces stiff competition for the award from Nigeria’s Justine Madugu (WAFCON winner) and Bankole Olowookore, Morocco’s Jorge Vilda, and South Africa’s Desiree Ellis.

Others in contention include Ivory Coast’s Adelaide Koudougnon, Zambia’s Karol Kayemba, ASEC Mimosas’ Siaka Traore, TP Mazembe’s Lamia Boumehdi, and 15 de Agosto’s Genoveva Anonma.

CAF will announce the final shortlist and award date in the coming weeks.

Björkegren’s influence has also seen the Black Queens nominated for the Women’s National Team of the Year category.

Meanwhile, the Black Queens coach has named his squad for Ghana’s upcoming WAFCON qualifiers against Egypt, scheduled for next week.
