Chelsea beat Real Betis in convincing match-up to lift Conference League trophy

Chelsea beat Spanish giants Real Betis 4-1 in the UEFA Conference League final, a matchup that appeared much easier for the English club at the Wrocław Stadium in Poland.

The win means, The Blues will lift the trophy for the very first time competing in the tournament.

Another European trophy in the bag for the West London club, adding a new trophy to the already secured three European trophies in their cabinet.

The win places Chelsea at the highest pinnacle in football folklore – being the first and only club in the history of any UEFA-sanctioned competition to win all four trophies (Champions League, European Super Cup, Europa League, and Conference League).

Chelsea won the UEFA Conference League on Wednesday with an incredible comeback to thrash Betis 4-1 on the night, setting a host of records under their belt.

A dismal start to the game put Enzo Maresca’s side on tight ropes after Isco, who dictated the opening period, delivered a no-look assist to put Abde Ezzalzouli through before he powered in the opener inside the 9th minutes.

The first 45 minutes were gone, deprived of much intensity and guile. Neither of the two sides was ready to throw a little caution to the wind, especially after Manuel Pellegrini’s side had taken an early lead.

The second half took a new twist after a tactical tweak from Chelsea boss Maresca, who made some changes, introducing the captain, Reece James.

Chelsea immediately took control of the second half, with Cole Palmer inspiring a historic comeback. An inviting dipping cross from Palmer’s favourite left-foot was too good for Enzo Fernandez to pass up after 65 minutes, with his well-timed header bringing Chelsea level.

Palmer got another assist to his name barely five minutes later, curling in another cross from the byline, this time, with his weaker right foot, which Nicolas Jackson turned beyond Adrian with his chest.

Chelsea continued with the same intensity and dominated play from there to highlight the work of their head coach as two substitutes linked up to seal victory late on.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall intercepted a throw before sprinting forward and passing wide to Jadon Sancho, who cut in on his right foot and fired an unstoppable curler into the far corner.

Moises Caicedo added an injury-time fourth from the edge of the box to ensure Chelsea became the first club to win all four of Europe’s major continental trophies – and the first foreign side to deny a Spanish team in a European final since 2001.

Maresca lifts his first silverware in his first season in charge, only days after finishing in the top four in the Premier League.

Not only have Chelsea made history tonight, there has been some all-time football history made too.

In Liverpool (Premier League), Crystal Palace (FA Cup), Newcastle United (League Cup), Tottenham Hotspur (UEFA Europa League), and Chelsea (UEFA Conference League), 2024-25 is the first season ever to see five different English clubs win a major trophy.
