Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana is set to miss the remainder of the season after undergoing surgery for a fresh hamstring injury.

The 24-year-old had been sidelined for three months due to a previous hamstring problem and had only just returned to first-team action last month.

“Wes had a muscle problem a few days [ago], and we are waiting for more checks,” Enzo Maresca said recently.

However, the Blues have confirmed that Fofana has now been forced to undergo surgery on another muscle issue.

“The club can confirm that defender Wesley Fofana has today undergone successful hamstring surgery,” a club statement read.

“Wesley was assessed by specialists this week after the 24-year-old suffered an injury of the muscle. Following that assessment, it was concluded that an operation would be required.

“The 24-year-old will now begin his recovery and undergo rehabilitation with the club’s medical staff at Cobham over the coming weeks. Everyone at the club is fully focused on supporting Wesley in his recovery.”

Fofana has racked up just 14 appearances this season and was also plagued by a knee injury that kept him out for much of last campaign.

Since joining Chelsea from Leicester City in 2022 for £75m, the Frenchman has struggled with injuries and has been unfortunate in his time at Stamford Bridge.
