Cody Gakpo faces FA reprimand for ‘I belong to Jesus’ celebration against Spurs

Gakpo lifted his jersey to reveal an undershirt bearing the same religious message Kaka famously displayed

Cody Gakpo is facing potential disciplinary action from the Football Association after mimicking Kaka’s iconic “I belong to Jesus” celebration during Liverpool’s 5-1 victory over Tottenham at Anfield.

The Dutch forward scored Liverpool’s third goal in a dominant performance that effectively secured the Premier League title for Arne Slot’s side.

Needing just a point to clinch the trophy, the Reds delivered a statement win with four games to spare.

After netting his goal, Gakpo lifted his jersey to reveal an undershirt bearing the same religious message Kaka famously displayed during the 2007 Champions League final.

The act earned Gakpo an immediate yellow card for breaching kit regulations.

His celebration drew instant comparisons to Kaka’s memorable moment with AC Milan, but it may now attract further scrutiny.

According to Law 4 of the International Football Association Board’s (IFAB) Laws of the Game, players are prohibited from displaying political, religious, or personal slogans on clothing during matches.

Gakpo’s gesture, while not malicious in nature, could still result in additional sanctions from the FA, as football’s global rulebook allows little flexibility regarding expressions of religious sentiment on the pitch.

The Law reads: “Equipment must not have any political, religious or personal slogans, statements or images.

“Players must not reveal undergarments that show political, religious, personal slogans, statements or images, or advertising other than the manufacturer’s logo.

“For any offence the player and/or the team will be sanctioned by the competition organiser, national football association or by Fifa.”
