Ghana U20 World Cup dream shattered in penalty heartbreak

Ghana has not been at the World Cup since 2015

Ghana’s Black Satellites’ campaign at the ongoing U-20 Africa Cup of Nations came to an end on Monday, after a 5-4 penalty shootout loss to Egypt.

The match had ended 2-2 after 120 minutes of action, with Egypt advancing to the semifinals of the tournament.

Ghana head coach Desmond Ofei made several notable selections for the crucial match, handing a start to Jerry Afriyie, who had returned to the team camp just a day before the game.

Afriyie’s experience and attacking prowess were expected to make a difference, but it was not to be.

Emmanuel Mensah and Phenyin-Denis Marfo were also recalled to the starting lineup, adding stability to the midfield and defense.

Midfielder Hayford Boahen was handed his first start of the tournament, rewarded for his impressive form in training and solid performances off the bench.

The hosts got off to a flying start, scoring two goals in just eight minutes through Momen Sherif’s clinical finishes.

Ghana’s defence was caught off guard, with Ofori McCarthy and goalkeeper Gideon Aseako struggling to contain the Egyptian attack.

However, Ghana showed resilience and grew into the game, earning a lifeline in the first half’s additional time when Egypt’s goalkeeper mishandled Abdul Aziz Issah’s long-range shot.

The Black Satellites went into the break trailing by a goal but with renewed hope.

In the second half, Ghana dominated possession and created several scoring opportunities.

However, they couldn’t find the equaliser until Hakim Sulemana scored a penalty just before the end of regular time, sending the match into extra time.

The Black Satellites’ hopes were further dented when Aaron Essel was sent off for a last-man tackle.

Despite being reduced to 10 players, Ghana managed to push the game to penalties.

In the shootout, Ghana’s dreams were shattered when Dacosta Antwi missed the second attempt. Egypt, on the other hand, scored all their kicks to seal a 5-4 win.

The result means the Black Satellites exit the competition, while Egypt advance to the semifinals and secure a spot in the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup.
