Hakim Sulemana expresses disappointment with Black Satellites AFCON exit

Hakim Sulemana won two Most Valuable Player awards in four games

Ghana winger Hakim Sulemana has expressed his disappointment after the Black Satellites’ exit from the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations at the quarterfinal stage.

Sulemana, who was brought on in the second half and was adjudged Man of the Match, reflected on the team’s journey.

“I think we came all out. It’s always hard when you are 2-0 down and then coming up. We gave all our hearts, and that’s where we wanted to get the win, but unfortunately, we didn’t have luck on our side, we tried our best, that’s what matters,” Sulemana said. “The aim was to qualify for the World Cup, and after qualifying, we get to win the trophy, but unfortunately, of course, we are not happy. We are out at the quarterfinals. We are not happy at all.”

The Black Satellites’ journey in the tournament came to an end in heartbreaking fashion as they lost 5-4 on penalties to host Egypt after a thrilling 2-2 draw in regulation time.

The match had ended 2-2 after 120 minutes of action, with Egypt advancing to the semifinals of the tournament. The hosts got off to a flying start, scoring two goals in just eight minutes through Momen Sherif’s clinical finishes.

Ghana’s defense was caught off guard, with Ofori McCarthy and goalkeeper Gideon Aseako struggling to contain the Egyptian attack.

However, Ghana showed resilience and grew into the game, earning a lifeline in the first half’s additional time when Egypt’s goalkeeper mishandled Abdul Aziz Issah’s long-range shot.

The Black Satellites went into the break trailing by a goal but with renewed hope. In the second half, Ghana dominated possession and created several scoring opportunities.

However, they couldn’t find the equalizer until Sulemana scored a penalty just before the end of regular time, sending the match into extra time.

The Black Satellites’ hopes were further dented when Aaron Essel was sent off for a last-man tackle. Despite being reduced to 10 players, Ghana managed to push the game to penalties.

In the shootout, Ghana’s dreams were shattered when Dacosta Antwi missed the second attempt. Egypt, on the other hand, scored all their kicks to seal a 5-4 win.

Ghana’s campaign saw them top Group C with 7 points, winning 2 games and drawing 1. They beat Senegal and Central African Republic 1-0 and drew 1-1 against DR Congo in the group stages.

The Black Satellites’ exit from the tournament is a significant setback, especially considering their rich history in the U-20 AFCON.

The team has won the tournament four times (1993, 1999, 2009, and 2021) and has produced talented players who go on to represent the senior national team.

Despite the disappointment, the team’s performance in the tournament has shown promise, and with the right guidance and support, they can bounce back stronger in the future.
