“I needed a new buzz”- Varane tells Tchouameni why he left Madrid

Varane Tchouameni

Raphael Varane has opened up on his reason for exiting Real Madrid to fellow French international Aurelien Tchouameni, stating that he knew it was ‘time for a new challenge’ in his career.

Varane joined Real from RC Lens back in 2011 and went on to become one of the legends of the iconic Spanish club, making 360 appearances while winning 17 titles in the period.

Now, fellow French international Tchouameni finds himself in a Los Blancos shirt, and he’s received a bit of advice on how to manage his career, particularly on when the time is due for a new challenge.

Speaking on The Bridge show podcast with Tchouameni, Varane explained: “It took a long time…you don’t decide that overnight. Madrid is the top.

“I won my 4th UCL and it was nothing much, it was normal. Then, I won the WC, I needed a new buzz.”

Tchouameni signed for Real Madrid in the summer of 2022 from Monaco and has already made 128 appearances for the Meringues, winning five titles since his debut.

He will be aiming to tread a similar path to that of Varane in terms of success at Madrid, yet he’s still got a lot to prove, as rumours surfaced this term indicating that a move away from the club could be on the cards.
