Liverpool boss Arne Slot could miss Premier League title party

Liverpool can secure the title with five games to spare if Arsenal lose at Ipswich

Arne Slot plans to spend the Bank Holiday in the Netherlands, whether or not Liverpool are confirmed as Premier League champions on Sunday.

The Merseysiders can secure the title with five games to spare if Arsenal lose at Ipswich and Liverpool win at relegation-threatened Leicester.

A victory would see them draw level with Manchester United’s record of 20 league championships.

However, Slot insists that he hasn’t given much thought to how he will celebrate such an achievement.

He revealed that, regardless of the results at Portman Road and the King Power Stadium, his plan is to spend two days with his family in Holland.

Liverpool could be crowned champions when they travel to Leicester

Slot said: “At this moment in time, nothing at all. I’m only thinking about trying to win a game of football against Leicester – and then we have two days off.

“So I will go back to Holland on Monday. That’s what my life is. First, let’s win on Sunday and see how things will work out. Right now, the plan is to go to Holland on Monday and Tuesday and be back here for Wednesday.”

If Arsenal win their next two league games – including Wednesday’s clash with Crystal Palace at the Emirates – and Liverpool beat Leicester, Arne Slot’s side could clinch the title by defeating Tottenham at Anfield next Sunday.

When asked if he had considered the prospect of winning the title soon, the Reds’ boss replied, ‘The honest answer is no.’

“I’m not sure you believe me but that is the honest answer. My whole life I’m living in the moment, in the day, and I’m not looking backwards a lot and I’m not looking forwards a lot because it’s the type of person that I am, that I am not constantly looking back at what I have achieved at former clubs.

“That is also so difficult in football, people constantly tell you, ‘Try to enjoy it, try to enjoy the whole journey’, but the only thing you are thinking about as a manager is, ‘Oh, at the weekend there is a game coming up as well and we need to win that and we need to win the next and we need to win the next’.

“So, maybe that’s one of the reasons: because I’m already so long in football that you get used to the fact of living day by day and trying to influence day by day.”
