Luis Enrique mocks ‘farmers’ league’ jibes after PSG reach UCL final

PSG will look to secure their first-ever Champions League trophy later this month

Luis Enrique took a swipe at critics who label Ligue 1 a “farmers’ league” after guiding Paris Saint-Germain to the Champions League final with a 3-1 aggregate win over Arsenal.

The result capped an impressive clean sweep against Premier League sides this season.

PSG secured a 2-1 victory over the Gunners in Tuesday’s second leg of the semi-final, sealing their spot in the final with a dominant overall performance.

The French champions had already eliminated Liverpool in the round of 16 and Aston Villa in the quarter-finals, before ending English representation in the tournament by knocking out Arsenal.

PSG also claimed a crucial group-stage win over Manchester City, a result that contributed to Pep Guardiola’s side crashing out earlier than expected.

Asked about his team’s outstanding record against English opposition, Enrique couldn’t resist a cheeky dig at critics who frequently dismiss Ligue 1.

“The league of farmers, no? We are the league of farmers,” Luis Enrique joked to TNT Sports.

“It’s nice. Now we are enjoying not only the results but also the compliments of everybody speaking about our team.

“We are a young team but the mentality and character, and also how we play football, I think is nice.

“I also have to congratulate my players because they are great.”

Paris Saint-Germain will look to secure their first-ever Champions League trophy later this month when they face Italian giants Inter Milan.

Luis Enrique’s side are on the brink of a historic treble, having already clinched the Ligue 1 title and booked their place in the French Cup final against Reims.
