Luis Enrique questions Premier League’s supremacy ahead of UCL tie against Arsenal

PSG have already eliminated Liverpool and Aston Villa en route to the semi-finals

Luis Enrique has cast doubt on the Premier League’s reputation as the world’s best league as he targets a third English scalp in the Champions League.

Paris Saint-Germain have already eliminated Liverpool and Aston Villa en route to the semi-finals – and now have Arsenal in their sights.

The PSG manager declared that the French giants are determined to “rewrite history” by winning the Champions League for the first time.

But Enrique also couldn’t resist a dig at Liverpool – recently crowned Premier League champions – suggesting that beating them and Villa has only boosted his side’s confidence ahead of their upcoming clash with the Gunners.

When asked if victories over English clubs would help PSG in their pursuit of the trophy, Enrique replied: “Maybe that is a question for Mr Arteta. But in terms of confidence, it is very positive for us.

“We beat Liverpool and they won the Premier League this year. But that doesn’t mean anything because every single match is different. Everybody speaks about the Premier League as being the best league in the world.

“I don’t know if I agree or not. But we are full of confidence and looking forward to playing in the semi-final. Is Arsenal the best team we have come up against? One of the best teams, yes, without a shadow of a doubt.”

Luis Enrique, who shares a close friendship with Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, acknowledged the Gunners’ victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the group stage of the competition back in October.

However, the former Spain boss believes PSG are a different proposition now.

He insists the French giants have improved significantly and are equally determined to make history in the Champions League – just like Arsenal, who are also chasing their first-ever title in the competition.

PSG are determined to “rewrite history” by winning the Champions League for the first time

Enrique said: “I would like to remind you that Arsenal has not won the Champions League before and only one of us will get the ticket to the final over the two legs and I hope that will be PSG.

“The game that you are talking about took place on October 1 so that was seven or eight months ago there are huge differences between now and then.

“I have reviewed the game, and seen how far our game has come and we are better now. We are a more complete team. Our next objective is to rewrite history and there is only one way to do that.”
