Man United set to battle Man City for Andre Onana replacement

United have identified the Portuguese goalkeeper as a prime candidate to replace Onana

Manchester United have reportedly turned their attention to Diogo Costa as the potential successor to Andre Onana, but they are set to face fierce competition from arch-rivals Manchester City.

According to Correio da Manhã, United have identified the Portuguese goalkeeper as a prime candidate to replace Onana.

The club’s scouting network has already been deployed to monitor Costa’s performances, with representatives recently attending Porto’s match against Famalicão at the Estádio do Dragão to observe the 25-year-old in action.

However, Manchester United are not the only club eyeing the talented shot-stopper.

Man City are also reportedly preparing a move for Costa, as they look to reinforce their goalkeeper options in light of Ederson’s struggles with recurring injuries this season.

Pep Guardiola’s side are expected to begin formal negotiations soon, with a reported €58million (£50m) offer in the works.

Porto would consider a transfer only if the offer approaches Costa’s full release clause of €75million (£58m)

Porto president André Villas-Boas is fully aware of the growing interest in Costa and is reportedly prepared to sanction a sale – but only on his own terms.

Any potential departure would not occur until after the upcoming Club World Cup this summer.

This approach is seen as a strategic move by Porto to maximise Costa’s market value, with the tournament providing a global stage for the goalkeeper.

Villas-Boas hopes that Costa’s performances in the USA could further heighten interest and drive up the potential financial reward from his sale.

Porto will face Palmeiras on June 15, followed by matches against Inter Miami on June 19 and Al-Ahly on June 24.
