Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella has revealed how the squad reacted to striker Nicholas Jackson’s red card against Flamengo in the Club World Cup ongoing in the United States.

Cucurella has shared his thoughts on how teammates managed the situation, which could have been avoided, in a game the Blues lost by 3-1 to the South American giants.

Jackson received his marching orders against Flamengo for a reckless high-foot challenge on Ayrton Lucas just 5 minutes after being introduced as a substitute during Chelsea’s defeat to the Brazilian side in the Club World Cup last week.

Jackson came from the bench to replace new signing Liam Delap, who was signed from Ipswich for £30 million after the Blues triggered his relegation release clause this summer.

After the unfortunate incident, which seemed borne out of frustration, the Senegalese striker later took to social media to apologise for his actions after the final whistle, stating he is “angry” with himself and taking full responsibility for his actions.

Spanish international, Cucurella, was asked how the Chelsea squad reacted to the striker’s reckless behaviour, to which the Spaniard said:

“Yes, for sure it’s been accepted. What happened is just football. This game is sometimes about mistakes. He made a mistake, but we have forgotten about this. We’ll miss him in the next game, but we have other players that can do his job.”

Jackson has been handed a two-match suspension by FIFA for the rough tackle. This means that the player will miss the club’s final group game against ES Tunis on Wednesday and then the round of 16 clash if the Blues qualify for the knockout stage.

However, the unfortunate incident could become a blessing in disguise for Delap to establish himself as the Club’s sole striker in the tournament.

Jackson, however, will be serving a game-time ban in the Premier League as well for another red card in Chelsea’s fixture against Newcastle last season. He will miss two Premier League games this season.
