Maurizio Sarri confirmed as new Lazio boss

Maurizio Sarri returns to Lazio for the second spell

Maurizio Sarri is back to Lazio

Maurizio Sarri has reportedly been confirmed as the new Lazio boss just 18 months after he resigned from the club in 2024.

The former Chelsea boss returns to management after staying out of work since his resignation from the Italian side.

In a club post by the official handle on X(Twitter), Lazio welcomes back the former Italian tactician to the club. Sarri was heavily linked with other top clubs over the summer, but chose to return to the largest and capital city of Rome.

The Biancocelesti, who only finished seventh in the Italian top flight this season, were able to convince the 66-year-old to return to the side.

His arrival follows the departure of Marco Baroni, who left the club earlier on Monday after just 12 months at the helm.

Sarri’s appointment is just one of many managerial reshuffles currently ongoing in the Italian top flight – with the likes of Atalanta, AC Milan, Juventus, and AS Roma all making changes to their head coach.

In his first spell with the club, Sarri managed the team from 2021 to 2024, overseeing 147 games, winning 72 and losing 44 during that period.

He led them to second place in the 2022-23 season, which was their best league finish since winning the title in 1999-2000.

Sarri is a native of Napoli, who started his career coaching small clubs, while he still worked as a banker.

He would later lead his hometown club Napoli to two second-placed finishes in three years and was named Serie A Manager of the Year in 2016-17.

He spent a single season at Chelsea in 2018-19, winning the Europa League (his first major trophy) and reaching the Carabao Cup final, before returning to Italy and winning the Serie A title with Juventus in the following campaign.

Following his second coming, club president Claudio Lotito said in a statement: “Maurizio Sarri has returned home.

“His return is a choice of heart, conviction and vision. With him we want to resume a path that was interrupted too soon, aware that together, we can bring back enthusiasm, identity and ambition.

“Welcome back to your home, commander.”
