Newcastle United are trying to beef up their midfield with the signing of Guendouzi this summer
Newcastle lead race to sign Lazio midfielder Matteo Guendouzi

Newcastle United are ahead of other suitors to sign Lazio midfielder Matteo Guendouzi, with the Carabao Cup winners reportedly preparing to complete a deal this summer.
Newcastle are preparing for next season, as they look to strengthen the squad in midfield areas, and the ex-Arsenal midfielder has been targeted for a Premier League return in a potential €40m deal.
According to a report by Gazetta dello Sport, via Sport Witness, Premier League side Newcastle have been linked with Lazio midfielder Guendouzi, with the Frenchman reportedly among the players the Serie A club are looking to sell.

The French international midfielder is under contract until June 2028 and has been valued at €40 million by Lazio, who are willing to sell if a significant bid arrives.
Guendouzi is considered an ideal replacement for Sandro Tonali. The 26-year-old midfielder has made 48 appearances for Lazio in the just-ended season, registering one goal and five assists.

However, his potential move to Newcastle hinges on the future of midfielder Tonali, who has attracted interest from the Old Ladies of Italian football, Juventus.
Reports from Italy have also revealed that Guendouzi is seeking a contract renewal at Lazio, and that his representatives are using Newcastle’s name to boost his value and secure a higher wage from his current club.

Lazio could miss out on keeping the midfielder, even if they decide not to sell him. The former Gunner is likely to be tempted by playing European football next season, with Newcastle booking their place on the last day of the season.
Lazio will miss out on continental action in the upcoming season after finishing seventh in the Serie A.
In addition to making changes to the playing squad, the Biancazzuri are reportedly looking to change the backroom staff as well, as they seek to hire former boss Maurizio Sarri as a replacement for Marco Baroni.
