Nsoatreman withdrawal from GPL unfortunate – Kurt Okraku

The President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku, has described Nsoatreman Football Club’s decision to quit the Ghana Premier League as “unfortunate”.
Nsoatreman confirmed their withdrawal from the ongoing 2024/25 season, citing concerns over the “security and safety” of their players.
The decision follows a series of incidents, including the tragic death of Asante Kotoko fan Francis Frimpong Pooley, who was stabbed during a match between Asante Kotoko and Nsoatreman on February 2.
Aggrieved supporters allegedly intended to retaliate, leading to an alleged attack by unknown persons in Kukuom, Ahafo Region, when Nsoatreman traveled to face Samartex.
Speaking on Asempa FM, Kurt Okraku expressed his disappointment, saying, “It’s unfortunate because Ignatius Baffour Awuah is my good friend.
“For somebody who has invested in football to go through that is unfortunate.”
However, he acknowledged that the decision was ultimately Nsoatreman’s to make, stating, “At the end of the day, it’s their decision and not mine. You have to respect people’s decisions.
The Ghana Football Association has since confirmed that all teams set to face Nsoatreman FC in the ongoing Premier League will be awarded three points and three goals following the club’s abrupt withdrawal from the competition.
Despite efforts by the GFA to persuade them to reconsider, Nsoatreman stood firm on their decision, forcing the football body to invoke the necessary regulations.
With this ruling, all teams that were yet to play Nsoatreman will automatically receive three points and three goals, a development that could heavily influence the title race and relegation battle.
The GFA has referred the case to its Prosecutor, with disciplinary proceedings set to follow in accordance with the governing regulations, including potential sanctions under Article 13(5).
The GFA has assured stakeholders that further updates will be provided as the legal process unfolds.
As the situation continues to unfold, the football community will be watching closely to see how the GFA’s disciplinary proceedings play out and what impact it will have on the league.
